Alice in Wonderland Halloween Party Crafts

Hi! Just a couple more updates so you can see some of the ideas I have. I have already shown a couple tutorials on some of the items I'm making, and I really hope you guys are enjoying those! They took forever to make, phew! Anyway, here are some items I'm making for my Alice in Wonderland Halloween party.

The neck and skull of my Jabberwocky skeleton. I didn't take a picture of it with the jaw, here.

My man in the moon blowing clouds. I didn't take a picture of the face I painted on it yet, but I have finished it and it looks smashing.

A centerpiece for the Red Queen room. This will go on the table.

Some flower eyeballs. I wanted to get something surreal, playful, and scary all at the same time.

Updated Layout

Huh?! Huh?! Awesome isn't it? Okay, maybe it's not THAT awesome, but it sure took me long enough to put together! Right now I'm working on pages so that all my blog entries can be a bit more organized. Unfortunately, it's not allowing me to do that for some odd reason, but I'm working on it nonetheless. What do you guys think of the changes? Yay or nay?

Change of blog

So my toe is not any better and due to the fact I'm in college, my funds and time short. Basically that means no ballet at all. I was thinking about this blog and how much I liked adding to it, but because of both circumstances, I can't really contribute to this as much as I could when I was still taking classes.

That got me thinking, maybe I should just change this to a personal blog about basically anything. That way I'm not restricted. I can make more reviews on exercise videos that aren't just ballet-based; I can show sewing tips I've picked up--both really popular attractions to this blog. Due to this change, there's going to be a lot of alterations. For starters, this will still be called Dizzily Dreaming. Second, ballet will still be discussed, just whenever I can get to it and it will be mixed with other things.

The changes will start pretty soon! Hold tight everyone!

Long time, Little Blogging!

Just so you guys know, I'm not dead XD

It's just that with finals, summer school starting, my part-time job starting, my friends getting in a bad car accident, I broke a toe...life gets complicated.

Ballet is on hold for summer due to my summer school. My day is 7AM to 9PM with work and classes so there's no time for ballet right now. I do hope to start again in the fall, but I might not be able to because of work, but that's just going to have to be a sacrifice I'll have to make for college.

The recital went great! I didn't get stage fright on the recital, but I did get really nervous during the dress rehearsal. Right before the recital I hoped over an ottoman and fractured my pinky toe. I decided to dance on it anyway even though it really hurt.

Here is the video that someone took of our performance. I am the last person to enter on the left side of the screen:
I hope that link works!

Diary update!

It's been what feels like forever since I last posted. Ballet is going great! I decided to participate in the recital after all, and have been given a vacant position. YAY! Right now the moves are real simple, but I'm having a lot of trouble with this jumping combination she gave us. It's something-I-forget, glissade, and an assemblé. I just cannot get this combination! ARGH!

My form has greatly improved. My hips are correct for the most part, I'm turning out more, and my knees no longer hurt as a result of all these! YAY! During the weekend, I'm going to put a beginner's guide to form up here to help those starting out.

I hope everyone else is doing well in their studies! Keep going strong!!

More funnies!

Phew.... I don't even know where to begin. Ballet has been going better and I already feel a great difference in my plies. But I have just been a lot of...pain lately. I'm not quite sure if pain is the right word but it seems to be the best word to describe it. It's this pressure on my chest and I feel almost like I'm longing for something, but I don't know what I'm longing for. Wow, that probably sounded really, really melodramatic...but I'm wondering if this stress of school is starting to affect my health.

Anyway, to boost everyone's mood, I found another ballet clip. This one also features Dawn French but this time she is paired with an actual ballerina! It's very funny and I hope you enjoy it.

Hiatus

Wow, I really haven't been active on this blog lately. I've just been so flippin' busy with school. My schedule was a mess due to some summer courses I would have to take due to a change in majors (undecided => chemistry!). Plus, many, many papers and exams coming up that I desperately need to work on. This month and the beginning of May will be very quiet from me. Not that it really matters since this blog isn't exactly hopping.

The search for a job is close to impossible. I have been trying for several months now because the cash I've saved up is starting to dwindle. This probably means I won't be able to take ballet over the summer, but that's okay since with the summer courses, that would mean a really packed schedule. Also, ballet has been really difficult for me lately. It feels like I can't even do the simplest moves. Plus, they are working mostly on the recital now, which I decided not to participate in for several reasons.

I plan on staying active on here. I have several things I want to blog about in order to help dancers wishing to start ballet. I'll try and post more, but with the way things are looking, it's probably not going to be much at all.

To those bothering to read this, thank you! It really means something to me that someone is reading all of the work I put into this blog.

Paying for Classes

Phew, I just paid my tuition for next month's worth of classes. I go to a park district so I can get a deduction based on my residency. Still, I just paid $210 for a little over one month of classes. I know that may seem like nothing to other people, but for a college student who can't find a job in this economy, that is the cost of one of my kidneys.

If this keeps up, I may not be able to keep dancing. Unless a company finally responds to my resume and job application, I'll be forced to either drop to once a week only, switch studios, or be so unlucky as to drop ballet altogether.

Is this $15/class a good price for dance classes? Other adult dancers, how much do you pay per class? Are you satisfied with your studio? I tried doing research on other dance studios in my area, but (get this) all I got was a bunch of "this link is missing" errors or they just won't let me click on links. So much for doing research....

Not in a good mood :(

Today was ballet class again. I don't know why, but I was just in a sad mood today. I don't think I got enough sleep and the stress from trying to balance all my schoolwork is starting to get to me.

It didn't improve my mood much that we started talking about recitals. My adult class is thinking about performing during the regular academy's recitals. I really don't want to go. My teacher wants us to be an inspiration to others, but I just don't want to show off my meager dancing skills just yet. Also, I've tried to dance in front of others before, and I always got really nervous before performing. (I used to be a danceteam, remember? That was many posts ago.) Not only that, but I'll just be really boring since I can't do much yet.

Anyway, they spent at least ten minutes, in addition to the ten minutes warming up, speaking about this. That means we wasted twenty minutes of practice time. Since I'm working really hard right now to pay for these classes, it's rather frustrating to be wasting them talking about something that can be talked about before or after class starts. I'm just really sick of all this wasted time!

Also, this new leotard I made... it really reveals everything, you know? I have rolls of fat on me that I never knew I had, and I consider myself skinny! It's so easy to see how girls, wearing these uniforms, get really self-conscious about their body and develop eating disorders.

This all just put a damper on my moods, and I just didn't feel like putting that extra effort into my dancing today. It's just depressing and frustrating at the moment.

As for the recital, maybe I'll do it. It'll be sort of a contradiction of mine to host this blog to support older dancers (and by older I mean 13+) and not perform. If my teacher thinks of it as inspirational, what harm could there really be in doing it?

Today's Youtube recommendation is this soloist's Black Swan pas de deux:
Isn't that lovely? And it's in great quality, too.

Busted

So the studio I go to called my house when I was gone. Instead of calling back later, they told my mom ballet classes were canceled. Now she knows; luckily, it was one of many things that upset her today, so I'm mostly off the hook. Still, despite all this, she started crying, shut the blinds to the family room, and watched Dr. Phil on the television for awhile.

What a miserable day.

Photographer Dilemma

The other day in ballet was a typical day, except for one thing: a photographer.

I was warming up at the barre when my instructor told us that a photographer was coming in to take pictures of us. She said a similar thing Tuesday, but the photographer never showed. At first, I thought this was him or her taking a rain check, but then I learned that the photographer was with one of the local newspapers.

Now I know you're wondering, why do I even care? Well, my mom gets this particular newspaper. My entire family gets this newspaper. I don't want them to know that I'm taking ballet class.

The story is I've been sneaking out to take these classes. I've told my mom that I'm driving to class at my college, but instead, I've been going to a local studio. I would wear my tights and workout clothing underneath jeans and a tshirt and then change once I got there. My shoes are hidden in my room along with my tights. I've been working so hard to keep this under wraps that a photograph with me in a ballet class would ruin it.

I don't want my family to know I'm doing this because, well, let's just say it was only this year that a picture of me went up on the wall that wasn't me in a recital costume or in a dance uniform. I quit dancing ten years ago. There was huge family drama when I quit and I still get hounded about why I quit to this day. I don't want them to know about this because this is supposed to be only for me. It's my own little sanctuary. I don't want to come home and talk about it with my family.

Luckily, the photographer understood. My instructor placed me on the end so I wouldn't be in the pictures and the photographer didn't get a statement from me after class. I think I'll be okay. So, obstacle hurdled and over with.

January Update!

January is halfway over, but it also means that my school is going to go full force soon, too. That means I'll be really busy, but I'll keeping recording information on here!

In case you haven't noticed yet, I'm going to be keeping up the January fitness theme. Since many people's resolutions are to get into shape, I thought I could review a couple ballet inspired exercise videos. Again, here is the link to a full list of exercise videos, hosted by Amazon: Ballet Based Exercises! It already seems quite popular! More popular than this blog, as a matter of fact. But I shall persevere!

I'm going to keep up with the ballet fitness theme until the end of January. So far, I have a couple more items planned. In my last review, I stated what I had planned, but I realized that I left a thing or two off it by accident. So here's the full list of items I'm going to be reviewing:

Ballecore (book)
Ballet Boot Camp
Ballet for Beginners
...and whatever else that may come up and tickle my fancy :)

I will also be reviewing my strength bands and see how well they help train my feet. I just received word that they'll be shipping soon. It's about freakin time! I'll also let you know how those are going.

On a different note, my ballet leotard pattern is coming in soon and I will start sewing that as soon as possible. I really need a uniform and if I use this pattern right, I will be saving myself a lot of money in the long run. Also, I'll be able to personalize it for myself. Can't wait! I'll be sure to comment on that, as well.

Since this month is already halfway over, I should already start thinking about next months theme... hmmmm... I wonder... If you have any ideas, feel free to leave a comment!

Tomorrow I have ballet class and I'm already spinning around, giddy with excitement. I was practicing my pirouettes today in the kitchen and I must say, I have remarkably improved in the short time that I've been practicing. I even managed a double! Granted, the form was probably terrible, but it sure made me feel good! I'm debating on how I should make my "Before" video to show you guys my progress (and myself progress). I'm still slow on the exercises and don't know them all by heart, which is the problem. Perhaps that should be included in the learning process, hm?

Stay safe in this dreary weather!

Ballet Class - 1/13/11

Today is an extremely busy day. I have ballet, volunteer work (the largest chunk of my day), and visiting friends before they return to college all day today. I'm definitely an introvert and I need time to relax in between, and I especially need rest before the new semester starts up. It's the volunteer work that's getting to me. They keep calling me and emailing me. Plus, I also have to do some work for the school newspaper later this week so I hope they don't start calling me then, too.

Anyway, today in ballet was okay. I'm feeling more confident about the ballet exercises but I'm still entirely confused about this frappé exercise she has us do. Apparently, the directions are front, side, front, side, back, side, back, side, and then it repeats or something? I know there are doubles in there somewhere but I'm just too confused to even attempt them. Then we did a difficult floor combination. I just can't seem to pick up everything in time. Another woman started taking the class after me and she's been doing fabulous, which eliminates the "I'm new" excuse. There's no way I'm going to be able to get en pointe within five years. No way. Sadly, if at all :(

In good news, I ordered some exercise bands to help me with pilates and building strength in my legs for ballet as this video helps demonstrate. I ordered the same ones she uses in the video and with the same strengths (red and blue). Also, I received word from NearSea Naturals that my ballet pattern has been shipped today. I can't wait to receive it! The only thing I have to look for now is some good lycra fabric. Hopefully some that is on sale.

Also, my school newspaper is looking for people with New Year's resolutions. Since mine is to start ballet again, they might feature me since it's slightly different. They want me to take a picture with my shoes or in a ballet pose... I might do with my shoes even though they aren't pointe shoes. I'm just not feeling too confident about myself to do a pose at the moment.

For all other adult beginners out there, keep going strong! Don't give up! I'm not! Ballet is great exercise! :)

Ballet class again!

Ballet classes for me are going to become regular since the holiday is passing. I'm going to finish up my ballet exercise reviews sometime soon. I made a lot of reviews for those since it's the New Year, people make resolutions, I don't have class and need to stay fit, and so on.

Anyway, here is a picture of my studio!!
Yeah, my camera takes crappy pictures...

Today we worked our usual exercises. I'm still completely floundering when it comes to getting them right. I'm terrible. Maybe I should get off my high horse and drop down to the beginner level. Only problem is I heard today that it was canceled since they couldn't get enough students. I guess that means I'm going to stay in intermediate. Once I get a hold on the exercises, I'm going to do a beginning video to mark where I am as I progress over the years.

WEEE!!!
It's snowing like... I was about to say hell but then I realized it couldn't possibly snow in hell... but it's snowing like a person with dandruff who shook out their hair... yeah. We can make that work. It's snowing a lot outside. It always seems to snow when I'm trying to sneak out of the house to go to these ballet classes. :/

So, based on what I messed up this time, I need to improve on:

  • Posture
  • Arms
  • Balance
  • Everything

Wow. How's that for little list of little things to tackle. Wish me luck!

Review-- The New York City Ballet Workout I

Here is yet another ballet inspired exercise series, this time from the New York City Ballet. I had some trouble with my usual program so I had to get screencaps a roundabout way. Anyway, here it goes!

So the video starts off with an introduction by Sarah Jessica Parker. I have no idea why she's telling me about dancers. Apparently she used to dance or something... maybe she's sponsoring this video? I don't know. The video intro after her speech is, well, trippy. My first thought was that maybe it would make a lot more sense if I had some marijuana. My second thought was "I wonder if this links up with a Pink Floyd song...." Yeah, the editing made me raise an eyebrow.
The exercise itself is sparse, but it helps because it makes it easy to see the dancer's bodies. The only problem with the sparse setting is that floor work tends to be in a spot light. The dancers wear black shoes and it's hard to see if they are pointing or flexing their foot. What I do like about the exercises is that they have both female and male dancers. This way, guys can also have an instructor to mimic.
Sometimes the shoes disappear into the shadows.

The narration drives me crazy, though. It's like a Discovery channel episode on wildlife animals. "Now, let us observe the New Yorker dancer as she warms up for exercises. With these exercises, she can develop her muscles so she can catch her prey." Yeah, I don't care for it too much. It's nice in that it reminds you to breathe every once in awhile, but other times it doesn't alert you to changes in the workout. Also, it's confusing since the narration changes on you so sometimes you are mirroring the instructors (their right, your left) and other times using the same side (their right, your right). The nice thing is that this DVD comes with options. You can turn off the narration. Heck, you can even change to contemporary music if you don't like to exercise to the classical music.I don't know how to describe the contemporary music. Sometimes it sounds like a Chinese string instrument and then other times it's jazz. It's a large medley of different sounds.

They are pretty good about showing alternative ways to perform stretches in case certain moves are too difficult for you, but they don't always show them or keep them on the screen. The demonstrators tend to show the ideal way to perform it instead, which is fine by me. The exercises are really nice, using real ballet to work the body. The abdominal section is nice because not only does it work your abs, but it works your legs, too. By concentrating on the legs, I didn't think about the burn in my abs, which makes me last longer and build more heat in my core.

The DVD case comes with a pamphlet. Inside are instructions, ways to use the DVD, best ways to exercise (don't eat, remember to breath, wear lose clothing, etc.), which is rather nice. The pamphlet also includes some nice pictures of the dancers performing. There are interviews and photo albums included on the DVD, but for some reason I wasn't able to access it. I'll have to try it on a different DVD player. I also have problems running this DVD on a computer with both Windows Media Player and Windows Media Player Classic. This must be run on a DVD player. Otherwise, certain items in the menu can't be selected and you won't be able to fast forward and click next. Other problems with the menu include that certain exercises are out of order. "Reverence" is listed before other exercises on the menu list even though the title placard says it should be the final exercise.
The DVD also offers a variety of exercise chapters that you can jump to from the title menu. In total, there are four major sections. In these sections are individual exercises that are about three minutes in length each. In total, there are seventeen exercises you can do. So if you do all exercises, it will be about a fifty-minute workout.

    Workout: 8/10
    Instructor: 5/10
    Setting: 8/10
    Camera: 8/10
    Level: Beginner-Advanced
    Is it actually ballet? Yes
    Overall: 7.5/10

Not a bad DVD overall, could use some improvements, especially the narration instructor. It made the exercise confusing at times. The people actually performing the exercise routine are professional dancers and can definitely perform the moves, saving the score from dropping significantly low.

If you are looking to buy the DVDs, it is best to buy them together with workouts one and two. This review was only on the first one, the other will come later, but if you think you'll like it, buying the two together will save you money in the long run. And the puzzle pieces fall together...

Today was my second day of adult ballet classes. I arrived fifteen minutes early to stretch, and then I waited... and waited... I was starting to get so nervous that I got the wrong day, but my teacher arrived so it was a huge sigh of relief. Anyway, today went marvelous. After two weeks I finally could dance again. I got lots of corrections, which makes me very happy. Apparently, I lean back too much during pirouettes and chaines. That would explain A LOT. T.T

I should really post of a picture of my ballet classroom here so you guys aren't just listening to me babble.

Many of the girls in my class want to see the movie, The Black Swan. I admitted I didn't like it but that the ballet portions were the best in the film, which is what they seemed the most interested in anyway. My teacher actually just wants to see it because a close friend of hers was the one who trained Natalie Portman for her role. Everyone seemed the most put off by the fact it was a horror movie. I tried telling them it wasn't scary, just a little gross, but that didn't seem to help.

Anyway, the puzzle pieces fall together because today I spoke to another woman in my class. She manages a company that helps mentally ill patients. I have been looking for someone to intern/volunteer for since...well... a really, really long time. She seemed interested in letting me on and promised to get my phone number next class (we were on our way out the door already). It seems ballet is not only going to help me with my dance obsession, but also my possible career outside! I'm so happy I could just die! Ha haha :D

Goals: better posture, more balance and control during pirouettes and chaines
